WMA Missionaries assist

Medical Ministries International

Jim Nipp, Julie Conley, and Mercedes George, of WMA Missions volunteered their time to assist Medical Ministries International, http://mmint.org, during May and June of this year on a Medical Project in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. Networking with other volunteers from the USA, Canada and the Dominical Republic, the Team were able to provide medical care for 747 people in the Jarabacoa mountain area over a nine day period.  This included 330 children and 311 adults in the clinics, and 106 dental patients.  1,484 prescriptions were filled in the mobile pharmacy visiting 9 villages. 792 people attended Health Care Classes and Bible Study Classes.  40 people became Christians.  WMA Missions was able to also help in providing a supply of medications for the project.  Prior to starting the Medical Team Project, WMA delivered Spanish videos on the life of Christ as well as Children's videos in Spanish to local churches and missionaries.  Other Bible Study materials were also delivered to the churches as well as electronic equipment.   Below are photos from the Short Term Mission Project.

Mercedes (left), Health Care Teacher from (USA/Dominican) is next to Medical Student, Clara,  from Canada with Julie, a nurse from WMA and Francis, (right) A Dominican Health Care teacher.  They are part of the 25 member Medical Team made up of people from the USA, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.

To show their appreciation for having received Medical Care, this family invited us in for lunch.  The beans and rice and chicken were delicious. The 16 year old daughter, (left), talked about how much she would like to continue her schooling.  Her area school only went to the 6th grade. The nearest school with upper grades is to far away to travel to daily.  Gifts were left for the family.

Cement blocks with wooden planks provide seating for these hungry souls. People gather in at Tim and Esther's little mountain church.  With enough money, they will be able to put in the walls of their church.

At one of our clinics, this was our available "outhouse"   While we only needed to use it for the day while we were providing Medical Care to the village, this was the only facility available day after day for the family who lives here.

Our journey to one village was delayed while "Cowboys" drove their cattle down the road ahead of our bus.   Loaded with our mobile pharmacy and all medical and dental supplies and equipment to operated our clinic,  our bus full of volunteers were ready to move on and get to work.

WMA Short Term Missionary, Mercedes, with Dental Student Joe, gather with children for a photo.  These children had just completed the Health Care class taught by Mercedes.

WMA Missionary, Julie, watches as a mountain family make Yuca Bread. A wood fire, in this simple kitchen, fries the Yuca Bread.  We all had samples to eat as soon as the bread was finished.

WMA Missionary, Mercedes, teaches hand washing in one of her many Health Education classes held in the nine villages where the Team visited.

A Dominican Dentist, part of the Clinic Team prepares to pull a tooth. Dental student, Joe, from the USA, assists.  The dental chair consists of a rocking chair held in place with rocks to keep it from moving.  Dental equipment, donated to WMA Missions, is being shipped to the Dominican Republic.

WMA Missions youngest Missionary, "Bekah" shares the love of God with a little Dominican boy.  Bekah, less than two years old, traveled to the Dominican Republic with her mother Julie, a recent graduate from nursing school.

WMA Missionaries, Julie and Mercedes, discuss plans for the days activities at the clinic.  This room was used for the Health Education Classes.

MMI Team members pray with the many patients lined up at one of the nine clinic sites.  Each day began with a song of praise, in Spanish, followed with prayer for a successful day at the clinic.

Patients arrived at the clinics on foot, motor bikes, pick-ups and even horse back.
